Meem (Michael Moebus) is a celebrated music producer from Sydney, Australia. Credited as a pioneer in electronic music making in Australia, he has continually brought a fresh angle to the world of sample-based beatmaking since his first release in 1998. The music is unique, diverse and fun. From roots in electronica, Meems music has gradually evolved into a more organic sound, borrowing heavily from funk, soul, jazz, disco, reggae, hip hop & boogie.

With 6 critically acclaimed releases under his belt, he has also remixed numerous artists including Mr Scruff (featuring Roots Manuva), and the ARIA award winning track ‘Sweetness and Light’ by Itchie & Scratchie.

Meem has performed live at some of Australia’s biggest music festivals including The Big Day Out, Sydney Festival, Vivid and Parklife. Meem has also supported many international heavyweights such as Thievery Corporation, Groove Armada, Jamie Lidell, M.I.A, People Under The Stairs, Girl Talk, The Bamboos and Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings.

Countless performances in Australia have taken him from Art Galleries, and Museums to Street Parties, illegal warehouse spaces, bush parties and even once in a squash court. Internationally he has taken his sounds across America and Europe, to the Mission in San Fran, underground radio in L.A., Brick Lane in London, clubs in Manchester, summer festivals in Bulgaria, and ex-military compounds in Croatia.

DJ Meem

DJ Meem is a respected DJ from Sydney, Australia. With a mammoth music collection, Meems musical tastes are nothing short of diverse. His interest in all genres of music makes for dynamic and broad-reaching DJ sets. A love of Funk music (in all its forms) is the backbone of many DJ sets, although aside from Funk you may also hear Soul, Disco, Hip Hop, Reggae, Rare Groove, Global Groove, Afro, Latin, Rhythm n Blues, Beats & Re-edits. In short Meem weaves ingenious DJ sets that span from incredible vintage music through to new release productions. His sets are praised for diversity, flow and fun. Meem has a genuine approach to playing the music he loves.

DJ Meem has performed widely across Australia and has played at major festivals including Vivid, Sydney Festival, Lost Paradise, Peats Ridge Festival and Sydney Film Festival. He is a regular DJ at long running events including Soul Of Sydney and Reggae Carnival. DJ Meem also hosts the long running and much loved Back To Funk BBQ seasonal parties at The Lady Hampshire. DJ Meem has held numerous Sydney residencies, some of which include The Opera Bar, Tokyo Sing Song, Miss Peaches, The Vic On The Park, Ching-a-lings, The Bearded Tit, Newtown Hotel, The Loft, Tonic Lounge, Marble Bar and The Arthouse. For many years he has performed as resident DJ at The Famous Speigeltent as part of The Sydney Festival, and has also supported numerous international artists including Tower Of Power, Mountain Mocha Kilimanjaro, Sean Kuti, The Bamboos, Thievery Corporation and Tom Findlay (Groove Armada).

Outside of Australia he has DJ’d in European Countries such as Croatia, Hungry and The UK, and has also played in the US in both San Fran and L.A.

Workshops

Meem has achieved design notoriety by releasing almost every album release in limited edition packaging. Often handmade, these editions are destined to become collector’s items. Covers have been crafted from wood, cotton, felt and vinyl upholstery, sometimes taking up to 5 months to complete. Meem’s CD design has been featured in the UK publication ‘CD – Art: Innovation in CD Packaging Design’ by Charlotte Rivers, alongside cover art for The Pet Shop Boys and design by Andy Warhol. His designs were also included in the Spanish publication ‘Graphic Beats: Independent Record Covers & Packaging Design’ by Miquel Abellon, alongside cover art for Martin Solveig and The Rolling Stones.

Workshops

Since 2007, Michael has worked extensively throughout Sydney, running music production workshops in High Schools, Intensive English Centres, Occasional Care centres, Theatres, and Youth Centres. Michael has worked for organisations such as Heaps Decent, The Opera House, Shopfront, Milk Crate Theatre, Futureskool, KARI, Youth Justice NSW and The Department of Education.

Michael has worked with a wide variety of students of all ages, and from many diverse backgrounds. Age groups have spanned from 5 year olds to older adults, although the majority of workshops have focussed on youth between the ages of 10 – 25. Participants include refugees, recent migrants, ex-homeless, aboriginal, students with behavioural difficulties, mental heath groups, disabilities, and sufferers of emotional trauma. Music created in these workshops was developed specifically for use in theatre performances, pubic events, recorded audio, and for radio and film.
